In 1951, Lieutenant John W. Hodgkin took his Piper J-3 Club from the Spanaway air strip right to the top of Mt. Rainier, setting a world record. Ironically, he was then charged in a court of federal law for landing an aircraft in a national park. He was fined $350, however his record break attempt was still valid.
