In the 20th Century, there was a thirty day power shortage, in which Tacoma then took energy from the aircraft carrier engines of the USS Lexington. In 2004, Tacoma was named as one of the most Livable Communities, meaning that the streets were safe, crime was low and the community always gave back to the town. In 2009, Tacoma elected its second African-American mayor, Marilyn Strickland. Overall, Tacoma has thrived under the light of its community, it started to develop post offices, shops, and other local facilities so everyone could live within the city without having to travel out of town.
Tacoma also hosts a lot of festivals; there is the Bluegrass festival, which is also the world’s largest bluegrass festival. This festival is hosted in February, at the Sheraton Tacoma Hotel. There are five stages, live bands, workshops, dances and many activities to keep everyone fully entertained. You can find the one of a kind Museum of Glass and the Lemay Auto Museum.
